We sat down with Hardisty Plumbing of Myrtle Beach today and asked some of the questions that we thought most of you would want to know. Our first question was;
Question: What is the #1 thing to look for when buying a new home, when it comes to plumbing?
Answer: Water leaks! I home inspection is very important because it can reveal any leaks the home may have. It is very serious, in fact as serious as improper electrical work that could lead to a fire. You see leaks will turn into mold if left undetected, and mold poses serious risks to your home and your health.
Question: If you are currently in a home, how can you detect a water leak, without a home inspection?
Answer: There are several clues you can look for. One is a higher water bill, or higher electric bill if there is a leak in your hot water. Also a damp smell or visible mold definitely point to a water leak. Toilets being loose where the base meets the floor also means there is a leak. When a toilet is sealed properly it will not budge, but if it is loose, it is definitely leaking, even if you can’t see it.
Question: What about water heaters, what is the right size for a home?
Answer: That depends on how many bathrooms there are, and also how many people are living in the home. The hot water heaters typically come in 40,60 and 80 gallons. Some homes cannot fit a large enough unit, and it that case tempering valves can be added. Tempering valves go on the top of the unit, and increase the hot water by about 30% and for less than $500 to have the installed.
Question: Any tips you would just like to impart, things you think people may not know?
Answer: Yes, do not use hot water to cook or drink with. The sediment builds up in the hot water tank and can get into your water. It seems like a good idea if you are boiling water to use the hot, but it actually is a terrible idea. Use cold water when cooking or drinking. Hot water is meant for washing hands, and bathing.
Also a little hospitality goes a long way. Offer your plumber something to drink or eat, be courteous, remember we are here to help. This can actually end up lowering your bill or getting you better quality of work. People tend to go out of their way for people who are kind to them. So it’s a win, win.
